Use Your Own AI Key (BYOK)

Atomizing a page and generating a post both call an AI model behind the scenes. To keep that cost predictable, the Free plan's monthly atomize cap and every paid plan's monthly distribution-credit allowance exist as a ceiling on AI usage. If you'd rather not be capped, you can bring your own API key instead.

What it does

Connecting your own Anthropic or OpenAI API key in Settings → AI switches your AI usage from "platform-billed" (metered against your plan's monthly allowance) to "your own key" - usage then bills directly to your own Anthropic or OpenAI account, and is no longer metered against the platform at all.

This lifts:

  • The Free plan's atomize cap (normally 3 pages/month)
  • The monthly distribution-credit cap on paid plans

It does not lift:

  • Your plan's connected-account limit
  • Your plan's page-capacity limit

Those two are plan-tier features, not AI-cost limits, and stay in place regardless of BYOK - see Plans and Pricing.

Setting it up

  1. Go to Settings → AI.
  2. Choose the provider (Anthropic or OpenAI) and paste your API key.
  3. Save. Only the key's last 4 characters are ever shown again after saving - it's encrypted at rest.

You can clear a saved key at any time to switch back to platform-billed usage.

Who can change this

Only workspace admins can add or change a BYOK key. Other members can see which mode is currently active (platform-billed vs. your own key) but can't change it.

When this is worth doing

If you're running high atomize/generation volume - more than your plan's monthly allowance comfortably covers - BYOK is the way to remove that ceiling entirely, at the cost of paying your AI provider directly instead.
